TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

PERSONAL ANALYSIS

The Institute is committed to the principle of intensive analytic work concurrent with training. Candidates are required to be in psychoanalysis upon entering the program and to remain in analysis for a minimum of 360 hours, of which a minimum of 300 hours is at a frequency of three times per week. The three times weekly frequency is to begin no later than September of the second year of training. Upon request, after the first year of training, the Training Committee may give consideration to prior long term intensive psychoanalysis in partial fulfillment of these requirements. The candidate's analyst must have graduated, at least five years prior, from a psychoanalytic training institute approved by the Institute.

The Institute is prepared to assist candidates who demonstrate financial need in meeting the personal analysis requirement. A list of Institute analysts comprised of graduates and faculty willing to accept a $40 per session fee, is available to candidates upon request.

COURSEWORK

Formal coursework consists of four years of classes, with two courses taken each trimester. In most instances, a theoretical course focusing upon conceptual or historical issues is paired with a clinical seminar in which candidates share an opportunity to present case material. Each course meets for one and one-half hours per session, for ten weeks, on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 PM and from 8:30 to 10:00 PM.

SUPERVISED PSYCHOANALYTIC EXPERIENCE

Candidates work with at least two patients in psychoanalysis. This work begins in the first year of matriculation, and these training cases are supervised until the candidate graduates. If candidates are unable to obtain patients for this supervised experience from their own resources, referrals may be made available from The Institute's Clinical Centers (see section on Clinical Services).

Candidates obtain a minimum of 200 hours of individual supervision, distributed among at least three supervisors, over five years, with each supervisor to be seen for a minimum of 40 hours.

Additional supervision by faculty and graduates is available at reduced fees.
