FACULTY Bios - Steve Kirschner
Steve Kirschner, LCSW
Teaching is one of my favorite activities because the conversations with students constantly challenge me to rethink and reexamine what I know, think and feel about the subject I’m teaching. One of the things I love about psychoanalysis is that it’s an excuse for unlimited curiosity; it can influence and be influenced by every aspect of life. I was a candidate at Manhattan Institute before I began teaching here and I enjoy the open minded atmosphere and respect for individuality.
My background is in painting and fine art; I received my MSW from NYU and my Certificate in Psychoanalysis from Manhattan Institute. I am in private practice in Manhattan and I also teach at NIP. I am especially interested in Buddhism, creativity, cognitive science, evolutionary psychology, fiction, the history of psychoanalysis and trauma theory.
The course I am presently teaching, Comparative Issues, provides a framework for understanding four schools of thought that have made important contributions to contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy. We examine Interpersonal, Object Relations, Self Psychology and Attachment Theory. We also consider the personal, social, historical context and the basic theoretical and clinical contributions of each school. Along the way we discuss what fundamental ideas the different approaches share, why psychoanalysis has produced so many schisms, what relational psychoanalysis is and where the field is heading.
