FACULTY Bios - Laura Barbanel

Laura BarbanelLaura Barbanel, Ed.D., ABPP co-director of the Manhattan Institute and Executive Director of the Trauma Treatment Center, is in private practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Brooklyn Heights New York. She works with individuals, both adults & children, with couples and families.

Dr Barbanel served as Professor and Program Head of the Graduate Program in School Psychology at Brooklyn College of CUNY for many years. She also served as Deputy Dean for Graduate Studies for the School of Education at Brooklyn College.

Dr. Barbanel’s professional expertise includes a long history of work on family issues, including abuse in the family and trauma. She has consulted to various groups on the issues of disaster and trauma, both after 9/11 and after Katrina. She co-chaired the APA task force on Promoting resilience in the Response to terrorism.

Dr. Barbanel is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology in psychoanalysis. She has served in a number of elected and appointed positions in the APA, on its Board of Directors and on the Committee for the Advancement of Practice (CAPP). She is president of Division 42, the Division of independent practice. In this capacity she has set up a Task Force on Health Care for the Whole Person which will focus on the collaboration of psychologists with physicians in the delivery of health care.
