Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis

TRAUMA TREATMENT CENTER

The Trauma Treatment Center (TTC) has been a division of the Manhattan Institute since 1989.

It was one of the first programs affiliated with an institute to offer specialty training in working with trauma.

Educational Programs:

Through its educational programs, the TTC serves the training needs of the Manhattan Institute and greater professional communities.  Comprehensive course work, supervision, and continuing education reflect our dedication to a clinical approach and philosophy that integrates interpersonal-relational psychoanalysis with the latest scientific advances in the study and treatment of psychological trauma.

All Manhattan Institute members are eligible to become members of the Trauma Treatment Center by completing the Center’s specialized training course, “Trauma: Theory and Therapy”.

Utilizing the model of interpersonally-mediated trauma, e.g., sexual abuse, course readings are focused at the interface between relevant contemporary psychoanalytic and traumatology literature. Topics covered include: common adaptations to trauma such as simple and complex PTSD; the spectrum of dissociative experience as it relates to trauma; transference and countertransference variations; and the long term effects of early relational trauma on later attachment styles and patterns.  Throughout the course emphasis will be placed on the impact trauma has on shaping the treatment relationship.

After completing the training course, members may participate in continuing education meetings and seminars.  Attendance in regularly-scheduled case conferences provides support and continuity to therapists engaged in this challenging work.  In addition, moderate-fee supervision with members of the TTC faculty is available by arrangement.

Clinical Service:

The Clinical Service of the TTC provides therapist referrals for adults seeing treatment from Psychoanalytically-trained clinicians who specialize in trauma.  Therapeutic services are offered on a sliding-fee scale and are conducted in the private offices of participating therapists, with locations throughout the metropolitan New York City area. Referrals also are accepted from agencies and institutions.  TTC members become eligible to receive patient referrals after the completion of specialty trauma training.
